The Quarterly Coal Report (Abbreviated) provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, and imports. All data for 2013 and prior years are final. All data for 2014 are preliminary.
Highlights for third quarter 2014:
:- U.S. coal production during third quarter 2014 totaled 255.3 million short tons. This was 3.9% higher than the previous quarter, and 0.9% lower than third quarter 2013. Production in the Western Region, which represented about 54.2% of total U.S. coal production in third quarter 2014, totaled 138.5 million short tons (5.4% higher than second quarter 2014).
:- Third quarter 2014 U.S. coal exports (22.7 million short tons) dropped 7.5% from second quarter 2014, and dropped 20.6% from third quarter 2013. Coal exports have declined for six quarters in a row.
:- The United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (82.5%), Canada (8.6%), and Indonesia (5.8%). U.S. coal imports in third quarter 2014 decreased to 3.2 million short tons from 3.5 million short tons in second quarter 2014.
